| 1) Technology Offer | |
| Novel VITAMIN E Formulation for I.V. Administration | |
| ABSTRACT: The technology comprises a novel oil-in-water emulsion for intravenous administration containing Vitamin E (α-Tocopherol) as an active ingredient. The emulsion is used to prevent or reduce damages resulting from peroxidation due to ischemia and/or reperfusion, and among others during organ transplantation. The technology is supported by a strong patent portfolio. DESCRIPTION: 1. Background Vitamin E is an essential, fat-soluble vitamin that effectively protects the cell membrane against peroxidation and preserves its integrity, even at relatively low concentrations. Tissue damage as a result of peroxidation caused by ischemia and subsequent reperfusion is a major problem, particularly in patients undergoing serious operations on the liver, heart or organ transplantations. As Vitamin E is capable of preventing peroxidation, it is reasonable to assume that an administration in pharmacological active doses can limit and/or prevent surgery related tissue damage. 2. Technology description The present technology provides a novel oil-in-water emulsion of Vitamin E as an active ingredient and phospholipids as an emulsifier. The emulsion is preferably administered as an infusion and is especially used to attain tissue protection against damages to human organs resulting from peroxidation. The solution is also suitable for use as an additive to organ preservation solutions in the course of organ transplantations. In addition to its antioxidative effect, Vitamin E strengthens the membranes of erythrocytes increasing thereby the life span of these cells. This could be beneficially applied to treat anaemia in hemodialysed patients. Consequently, the inventive emulsion might have a cost-saving effect on the erythropoietin (EPO) dosage, which is high-priced and currently used to treat anaemia in hemodialysed patients. INNOVATIVE ASPECTS: The overall aim of the invention was to find a Vitamin E preparation for I.V. application in the form of an infusion. This goal was achieved by providing an oil-in-water emulsion with a high content of Vitamin E. The emulsion is well-tolerated, allows a safe administration of high doses of Vitamin E and is especially suitable for susceptible patients. MAIN ADVANTADGES / BENEFITS: • Well tolerated and safe emulsion for I.V. administration. Suitable for susceptible patients. • Prevention of tissue damages resulting from peroxidation, e.g. during surgery. • Improvement of erythrocytes-status in haemodialysed patients (saving of EPO). TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS: CURRENT STAGE OF DEVELOPMENT: Several phase I and phase II clinical trials have been performed. Study reports are available. INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS (IPR): Granted Patents in US, EP and China. Countries: EP (AT BE CH CY DE DK ES FI FR GB GR IE IT LI LU MC NL PT SE), USA, China. Patent pending in Japan. MARKET APPLICATIONS: Ischemia/reperfusion injury (surgery, organ transplantation). Vitamin E supplementation (hemodialysis, postoperative periods, Intensive Care Unit). Additive to organ preservation solutions. TYPE OF COLLABORATION SOUGHT: License agreement or sell-out PARTNER PROFILE: Licensing partner or acquirer for further development of the technology. | |
