 Company (Organisation) details
Our organisation produces each year 500,000 red blood cell units, 10,000 thrombapheresis units, 30,000 plasmapheresis units and 140,000 litres of plasma for hospitals and industry. Stem cell preparation and various diagnostic tests (NAT and serology-based) are additional services provided. In our clean room we also provide cell preparation services for academic institutions or small business entities. In addition to the required national certifications our laboratories fullfill also standards as required by CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments) or EFI (European Federation for Immunogenetics) .

With the recently established “Blood Donor Biobank” we offer a unique resource for biomarker research by providing plasma samples for R&D projects. In our fully automated -42°C cold room there are already over 3 Million plasma samples stored.

With the consent of 10.000 blood donors we are able to offer more than 100.000 plasma samples thereof from healthy or diseased donors. This unique resource of multiple plasma samples taken from one person over a period of several years before the onset of a disease could be used for biomarker research and give new insights into the development of a disease.

Blood donor biobank

ABSTRACT:
The „blood donor biobank“ offers a unique resource for biomarker researchers. By using blood samples from patients collected and cold stored at -42°c under standardised procedures before the onset of a certain disease the prognostic value of known biomarkers could be investigated or new biomarkers developed. 400,000 registered blood donors are the basis for this innovative project. Only because there are so many blood donors is the key to having a sufficient number of potential biobank participants. Each year approximately 1200 blood donors develop a disease that is of interest for the „blood donor biobank“, such as cancer, diabetes, CNS- or heart disease. On average these blood donors donated blood at least twice a year for several years before the diagnosis. These samples taken from one person over a period of several months or years before the onset of a disease could be used for biomarker research and give new insights in the development of a disease.

DESCRIPTION:
1.Description of product
Biobanks are an important resource for biomedical research. The blood donor biobank offers plasma samples taken from one person over a period of several years until the diagnosis of a disease and plasma samples from age and sex matched controls

2. What does the product or process do?
The samples may be used for biomarker research and validation. The samples of the blood donor biobank are a useful complementary source to the sample collections in hospitals where samples of patients after disease diagnosis and during treatment are stored.

3. How does the product or process work?
From every donor a small amount of plasma from every blood donation is stored at -42°c. With the informed consent of the blood donor those samples may be used for scientific research.

4. In what applications can the product or process be used?
Diagnostics

INNOVATIVE ASPECTS:
Whereas most major biobanks projects with an aimed participant number of several hundred thousands are at the start of there enrolment phase (UK biobank, US biobank) the blood donor biobank has already access to over 3 million blood samples from 400.000 blood donors at our organisation bank that have been collected over the past 5 years. 10.000 donors have given their consent to use these samples for biomedical research.

The fact that from a blood donor biobank participant multiple samples collected over a period of several years are available is another important difference to other biobank projects.

MAIN ADVANTADGES / BENEFITS:
The advantages of the blood donor biobank are the samples that have been collected and stored before the diagnosis of a disease. The prognostic value of known biomarkers can be investigated by analysing these samples or new biomarkers can be developed by an intraindividual research approach.
